The 13th Annual Nick Petry Workshop held many opportunities to hear from professionals in various aspects of the beef industry- each one a specialist who works at different levels within the industry. Our intent was to extend the perspective to encompass not only the producer, but those on the other end of the industry who are using and selling beef. We examined viewpoints from consumers like the large grocer, restaurants, both high-end and fast food, specialty high-end meat markets, and chefs. What are things that these consumers look for in their beef? We addressed what we can do as producers to meet what the consumers are demanding, for instance, to increase flavor and health of the product. We also asked what changes we can make on the ranch at a production level in order to meet all of these different consumers’ needs. Our guest speakers brought a unique perspective to each of their presentations that allowed for some rich conversation and question and answer sessions. The Nick Petry Events Page contains audio and visual aids from the 13th Annual Nick Petry Workshop held at the National Western Stock Show Complex and sponsored by the NWSS Scholarship Trust and the WCIRM.
As part of the Colorado Ranching Legacy Program, WCIRM co-hosted a finance and marketing seminar on October 29, 2010 featuring several speakers in two themes: Financing Your Ranching Operation and Marketing Opportunities and Ranching for Tomorrow.
As part of the Cropland Policy Outreach, Boulder County Parks and Open Space and Colorado State University Extension in Boulder County will be hosting two Agricultural Tours this year. The tours will highlight three different farms each time, representing field and forage crops, vegetable crops and livestock. Farmers will give a brief talk and will be available to answer questions. The goal of the tours is to show residents the spectrum of agricultural production systems, issues, challenges and opportunities on open space lands. Each tour will cost $5 per participant.
